I enjoyed your article at The Counsellors Cafe. A notable exception from your list is Ernest Lash from Irvin Yalom's 'Lying on the Couch'.

Thanks, Erin. I remember someone telling me years ago he'd written novels, but promptly forgot. Off to order that now.

My pleasure. It's a worthwhile read, as is 'When Nietzsche Wept' a fictionalised exploration of what it might have been like if Nietzsche had consulted with Freud's mentor, Josef Breuer.

Oh, that’s another one I’ve definitely got to add to the collection! I’m doing a post on famous therapists fictionalised – though haven’t found many – for which this would be perfect.

Sebastian Faulks' wonderful novel 'Human Traces' deals with the careers of Jacques Rebiere and Thomas Midwinter and their pioneering work of the late 19th century in the field of psychiatry.

Thanks for this suggestion. It looks as if there might not be a lot of actual therapy in it, but I’ll get hold of it anyway as I’m contemplating a post on psychiatrists as therapists and I’m also interested in the history of mental health care. I’m a bit daunted by the 600+ pages though!

Perhaps you would like to include Dr. Spielvogel, the therapist in Philip Roth's raucous and naughty Portnoy's Complaint. He is, in fact, the entire point of the novel.

Thanks for that suggestion, Paul. I’ve never read Portnoy's Complaint but will set about rectifying soon.

Thanks for this series! Many of these are new to me.

Please do look at "Other Women" by Lisa Alther (1984) http://www.lisaalther.com/otherwomen.html My favorite narrative of a woman's therapy, alternating her perspective with that of her therapist, but also weaving in the therapist's memories of her own mentor / supervisor and of her own life history. And the client is herself an Emergency Nurse, and the child of two Social Workers, so there are many-layered observations of people working in "helping professions." I've loaned it to many beginning psychotherapist over the years.

Another that I've enjoyed more recently is an amateur fanfiction novella, set in the world of "Good Omens" by Pratchett & Gaiman: "Demonology and the Tri-Phasic Model of Trauma: An Integrative Approach" by Nnm
https://archiveofourown.org/bookmarks/724245578 It's told from the psychotherapist's point of view. Author meant it to be a single chapter, but the character of the therapist refused to be left hanging. I was unexpectedly moved at several points, not least the ending.

Thanks for these suggestions, I'll certainly follow them up. And profound apologies for not replying sooner. I don't know why I didn't see this before.
