Welcome!

If you enjoy short stories, are fascinated by identity
or are simply looking to fill your time, there’s something here for you.
Grab a drink, sit back and listen to me read a story or three.
Pull up a chair, and/or a group of friends or family,
and see if you can identify the quotations in my literary quiz.
Share your thoughts here, with friends and/or
make a date to join me for an online bookish chat.

Listen to my stories

I’ve selected three short stories from Becoming Someone,
each loosely associated with some aspect of identity.
If you’d like to sample some of the other 39 stories in my collection,
you’ll find more readings on my YouTube channel
if you follow the link below.

I Want Doesn’t Get

A very short story about self-sacrifice, sibling rivalry and revenge
at a family funeral.

In Search of Mr Right

A light-hearted story about a midlife crisis, featuring an estate agent,
a record shop and a Roger Daltrey lookalike.

After Icarus

A poignant story about a man
who identifies more with birds than with people.

Try my literary quiz

Here are 8 short quotations from classical or contemporary novels,
each illustrating some facet of identity.
Challenge yourself to identify the novel it comes from;
if you’re stuck, the next slide gives a choice of 3 options;
check out your answer in the slide after that.
Have fun! You can pit your wits against your friends and family,
and use the comments box to let me know how you did.
(Can I trust you not to cheat?)

Wondering why I chose these particular quotations?
Pondering what they say about identity?
Come along to the live book chat and all will be revealed!

Share your thoughts

Invite your friends and family to listen to the stories
or challenge them to try the quiz! Something different to discuss

How fun, Anne! "After Icarus" is one of my favorite stories from your Becoming Someone book. What a clever way to hold a literary fringe festival online.

Thanks, Charli. My publisher wanted to start the book with "After Icarus" but I preferred to go with a more straightforward story. Perhaps she should have pulled rank! I've a couple more things to sort out – including setting up the Zoom session – but I think it is going to be fun. Would be good to get an international audience!

This was a fun quiz, Anne. I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't do as well as I might have hoped.

They're not so easy out of context but, unlike in the full quiz which I've done live, I tried to pick novels where people would at least recognise the answers!
