Why should we expect such an endeavour to tranquillise our minds?
I was similarly surprised by one of the questions in my interview about my debut novel, Sugar and Snails, for Bay TV Liverpool. Would you say you’re a political writer? I was asked. I decided I must be, although I hadn’t put myself in that category until then. But politics isn’t confined to political parties, alarming as they can be. Politics is concerned with social systems and, while we can’t function without them, they can be uncomfortable places to be.
Yet I’m far from alone in reading to signal the end of a busy day. If you read for relaxation, or if you totally reject this notion, or can supply a better word to describe the purpose of my evening reads, I’d be pleased to hear your views.
Meanwhile, you can check out this month’s reviews by clicking on the image, although you’ll need to go to Shiny New Books for my review of the non-fiction (and not particularly relaxing) book Learning from Baby P. |
